Local advocate and founder of MSterious Miracles, Marissa Poppens, joined SugaBear & La Molly in the studio to share her powerful journey with multiple sclerosis (MS) and the life-changing work her organization is doing for the community.
“MS is a neurological disease where your immune system attacks your nervous system,” Marissa explained. “It affects everything your brain controls; walking, talking, even breathing. Some days I can tie my own shoes, and other days I need help just to get out of bed.”
Marissa’s battle began the day she woke up paralyzed from the waist down. After multiple MRIs, she learned she had lesions on her brain and spine. Facing challenges with mobility, employment, and understanding from others, she turned her struggle into action.
“I started MSterious Miracles so people don’t have to walk this journey alone,” she said. The nonprofit provides life-changing support for those living with MS, including medical equipment, home modifications, transportation, and emotional encouragement. One supporter shared, “For the first time in a long time, I could shower without fear. They’ve given me my independence back and reminded me I’m not alone.”
Marissa is now bringing the community together with MSterious JaMS, a benefit concert on Saturday, August 2 at The People’s Building in Aurora. The event features six local bands, food trucks, and raffles including a Caribbean trip giveaway, plus a VIP lounge.
