Hailing from Plainfield, New Jersey, BLK ODYSSY is an explosion of pop-punk energy, alternative rock, and the lyrical purity of rap. Employing a grungy vocal style and a soulful R&B flow over distorted guitar arrangements, BLK ODYSSY’s frontman Juwan Elcock contributes to a magical synergy between him and the group’s guitarist, also his long-time collaborator, Alejandro Rios. If you haven’t heard of the lovechild of “Blink 182” and “Outkast,” let me Put You On.
This dynamic fusion of genres can be heard on the second track of their 2024 album, 1-800 FANTASY. The track, titled “XXX,” sets out with the moodiness of a new-wave composition, that quickly morphs into a punchy post-punk tune. In an interview with The Recording Academy, he describes the tune as listening to “one of your favorite rappers over a remix of one of your favorite punk songs…” Juwan’s lyrics describe a dangerous desire, yearning for a girl he’s obsessively “fixated” on. The track features Wiz Khalifa, whose bars elaborate on this tale of longing. While many songs throughout R&B history tell a similar story, none recount this heartache and compulsion as energetically as BLK ODYSSY. Their most recent release, a collaboration with the legendary producers Timbaland and Danja, follows a similar energetic blending of genres. ON SITE skips along with a western swing, the fullness of a marching band, and the undeniable swagger of a Timbaland track.
Although the group originated in Plainfield, New Jersey, there is nothing plain about their craft. Leading with rich musical contours, complexity, and a nuance that transforms the scope of popular R&B, BLK ODYSSY is now at the epicenter of Austin’s seismic music scene. The abundance and range of their sound can be seen on full display during the band’s “Tiny Desk Concert” appearance. Once backed into the iconic NPR corner office, BLK ODYSSY shape shifts into an eleven-member ensemble, with a smooth brass trio, four-piece rhythm section, a trifecta of backup singers, and Juwan Elcock himself taking center stage. Don’t miss out on this innovative bunch’s unique sonic expressions and masterful blending of musical styles, you can catch them on tour sometime between now until August 3rd!
